Our School

Armidale High School, situated on the south side of the city, is a co-educational partially selective high school from Year 7 to 12. It operates under the Positive Behaviour for Learning Model (PBL) and our core values are Pride, Respect and Responsibility.

Armidale High School opened in 1920 and has a long and proud tradition of academic, sporting and cultural success.

Written communication with our parents and community is mainly via the AHS Skoolbag App and our school website.

Curriculum

Armidale High School has a strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, especially in the core subjects.

A wide variety of subjects is on offer at Armidale High School from Year 7 onwards including a wide range of vocational subjects offered at school and the nearby TAFE. There is a choice of French, German or Japanese to study at all levels and students have opportunities for short and long exchange programs and study tours in Japan, Germany and New Caledonia.

There is extra support available at Armidale High School to assist all students in achieving their potential.

The Clontarf Academy, a mentoring program for Aboriginal boys, is on site and offers students assistance both at school and beyond.

Vocational Education is fostered through close links with the Armidale TAFE and local communities.

Extra Curricular Activities

Armidale High School offers opportunities to participate in a huge variety of academic, sporting and cultural competitions including Tournament of Minds, Mock Trial, Premier’s Debating Challenge and Premier’s Reading Challenge.

In the creative and performing arts students can join jazz combo, concert band, string ensemble, vocal group, choir and dance group. “Coming of Age” was the very successful musical produced this year.

Leadership opportunities at Armidale High School include SRC and Senior Student Leadership Team with eight captains.

Special Features

Armidale High School has modern science labs and technology areas, three computer labs, extensive wifi network, auditorium and indoor sports stadium.

The New England Regional Indoor Sports Centre (NERISC) is a state-of-the-art indoor facility for our students to play basketball, volleyball and indoor hockey and softball.

A Special Education Unit offers support for up to thirty students with special needs.

An agriculture plot allows students to experience a model farm.

Enrichment Programs

Armidale High School organises overseas trips for students and sister school programs with cities in Japan and Germany.

Students regulalry participate in projects with NECOM (Conservatorium) and NERAM (Art Gallery)

The school was the 2012 winner of the prestigious state-wide Nanga Mai Award for School/Community partnership with programs including Iron Man Welder, Ag Lads, Paws Up and Imagine This, an innovative program for girls.

Armidale High School has a selective class in each of the years 7 to 10 for academically gifted and talented students.

The school offers the widest elective choice to ensure students are given every opportunity to develop potential.

Students’ talents are often used by our partner primary schools particularly as referees for sporting events and carnivals and students who are identified as leaders are invited to participate in mentoring programs with younger students.
