Established in 1899, Somerville House provides a co-educational Pre-Prep program, classes for girls from Prep to Year 12 across Junior, Middle and Senior sub-schools and Boarding from Year 6.
While the School is rich in heritage and tradition, rightly valuing what the past has given us, Somerville House is an exciting and innovative centre of learning.
The School?s close proximity to the vibrant Brisbane CBD and South Brisbane cultural, leisure, tertiary and medical precinct present our students with an opportunity to enjoy first class learning and leisure opportunities while enjoying the School?s state-of-the-art facilities.
Somerville House is a school of the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association. The PMSA is a mission of the Presbyterian and Uniting Churches.
In 2011, Mrs Flo Kearney became the eleventh Principal of Somerville House.
Our Philosophy and Vision
As a school of the Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association, Somerville House embraces the teachings and theology of the two churches while providing a well-balanced education that is academically challenging, varied physically and recreationally, socially stimulating, and rich spiritually.
The School?s highly qualified teachers aim to educate students to become confident and independent citizens, conscious of their strengths, responsive to the call of God in their lives, and capable and willing to contribute to the greater good of society.
Somerville House offers a supportive environment with renowned academic, cultural and sporting facilities and programs. The School maintains its academic excellence through a rigorous academic program structured to encourage highly motivated learners and taught by highly qualified teachers.
Sport is an important part of life at Somerville House. The School enjoys a proud and prestigious tradition within the QGSSSA and Andrews Cup Sporting Associations. Somerville House competes in 17 sports within QGSSSA, Andrews Cup and other organisations, including BSRA Rowing and BWPI Waterpolo.
All Somerville House students have an opportunity to participate in a wide array of exciting sports both in lessons and at various competitive levels. Generally, Junior School sports compete in Andrews Cup, Middle School students are eligible for some Andrews Cup and some QGSSSA sports and Senior School students compete in the QGSSSA competition.
The core sport programs at Somerville House aim to give students of all ability levels the opportunity to enjoy sport and improve their skills. Core sports have a lot to offer students as they foster skill development, team work, mateship, commitment and determination.
Music at Somerville House caters for a wide range of individual interests and skill levels. The Music Program is conducted both in the classroom and through our co-curricular programs. Our Academic Music program incorporates a comprehensive co-curricular ensemble program including: string ensembles, bands and vocal choirs as well as many woodwind, percussion and string small ensembles.
The Somerville House Music Department offers many concerts and musical experiences throughout the year. The core of our Co-curricular Music programme is the Kaleidoscope Series of four concerts through the year. These concerts feature all the Music Ensembles in our
Co-curricular Music Program. This gives the students an opportunity to perform for family and friends of the Somerville House Community.
Boarding and International Students
Nowhere is the celebrated Somerville House spirit more evident than among our Boarding Community.
Boarding at Somerville House is offered from Year 6 to Year 12 for both Australian and International students.
More than 100 girls from diverse backgrounds and nationalities call Somerville House Boarding home. They travel from around Australia, and from around the world, to take advantage of our renowned academic, cultural and sporting facilities.
Somerville House Boarders live in a purpose built and air-conditioned Boarding House, tailored specifically to girls? needs. Our Boarders enjoy modern bedrooms, shared leisure spaces, in-house kitchens, modern bathroom facilities, supervised study spaces, sound-proof music areas and views overlooking Brisbane city.
The Presbyterian and Methodist Schools Association (PMSA) believe enrolling international students in their schools provides reciprocal benefits for all students. As such, Somerville House, is committed to allowing International Students the opportunity to participate in quality education. This commitment also enhances the learning experience of other students at Somerville House through daily contact with individuals coming from different cultures and backgrounds.
