About South Gippsland Specialist School
South Gippsland Specialist School is located on the Leongatha Educational Precinct. The school caters for children aged 6 to 18 who have been diagnosed with an intellectual disability.
The school was purpose built and completed in 2009. The school has an indoor heated pool, multipurpose gym, extensive fruit and vegetable gardens, chicken pen, multimedia room, generous sized classrooms and a caf?? style kitchen that has doors that can be o”ned up into the courtyard for celebrations.
The school also employs a Speech Pathologist Occupational Therapist, Music Therapist and a Social Worker who work with all students and their families. Student to staff ratios are kept small so that students receive the support that they need to complete tasks.
Students are encouraged to reach their full potential in a safe learning environment that fosters positive community relationships.
South Gippsland Specialist School provides a diverse and engaging curriculum that incorporates the AUSVELS
Where possible, students are encouraged to gain School Based Apprenticeships and we have close access to Federation University and Community College Gippsland allowing a range of Vocational Training opportunities.
Senior Students also have the opportunity to access the wschools new Trade Skills Centre. The school runs and extensive work experience program for senior studetnts.

What Is School Wide Positive Behaviour Support?
South Gippsland Specialist School began implementing SWPBS in 2012 with the purpose of establishing, a safe, supportive and positive learning environment.
SWPBS involves the establishment of a continuum of behavior support that considers all students and emphasises prevention. It is a proactive approach and focuses on teaching all students agreed expected behaviours and pro-social skills rather than just reacting to inappropriate behavior.
In addition, a small number of students will require highly individualized and intensive interventions. These interventions are:
