School Profile

The Hills Grammar School is an independent, non-selective, co-educational and non-denominational Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 School. The ethos of the School is underpinned by humanitarian values and its major emphasis is the development of excellence in scholarship, personal development and citizenship.

Success across the curriculum at The Hills Grammar School is highlighted by a history of high HSC placings: First in the State in English Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 1, Latin Extension, Music Extension 1, VET Information Technology and Ancient History; and Top Ten in English Extension 2 (twice), Information Technology (twice), Hospitality and Modern History.
The school is also well known for its extensive Co-curricular Program offering a wide range of activities in Music, Sport, Leadership & Service, Outdoor Education and the Creative and Spoken Arts.
In 2013 the School became an authorised World IB (International Baccalaureate) School – Primary Years Program.

Facilities

Set in 16.2ha of magnificent bushland, facilities at The Hills Grammar School include: fully- equipped multi-purpose with gymnasium and weight training area; amphitheatre, music complex, performance centre, drama theatre and workshop spaces; state-of-the-art science and HSIE facilities; art rooms, studio and gallery; four-level library with fully equipped theatrette; food technology kitchen and cafeteria-style canteen; fully lit Sports Precinct including an international sized oval, four multi-purpose courts and a Sports Pavilion. There are close to 400 computers in Junior classes, library and computer labs. Students in Years 7 – 12 are issued with a Tablet PC.

Other Features

The Hills Grammar School recognises and caters for gifted children as well as children with some learning difficulties. From Year 7, an academic Honours program offers flexible pathways of study for students with high ability in one or more of the following areas: Humanities (English, History, Latin), Mathematics and Environmental Science.

The extensive student welfare network at The Hills Grammar School includes a K-12 director of Student Wellbeing, house tutors, consultant psychologists, a strong peer leadership system, and a student leadership committee. Work experience is run for one week in Year 10. Career and tertiary awareness is a key component of the school year.

Curriculum Years K-6

The Hills Grammar School is an authorised World IB School – Primary Years Program (PYP). The PYP allows students to explore their world through a series of guided inquiries that enrich the curriculum and give students increasing responsibility and ownership over their learning. The transdisciplinary nature of the program increases collaboration across and between classroom and specialist subjects and enhances the learning experiences for all.

The Junior School teaching programs at The Hills Grammar School focus on the Key Learning Areas: English, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Human Society and its Environment, Languages (French), Creative Arts, Physical Education, Health and Personal Development.

Curriculum Years 7-12

Core subjects (Years 7 to 10): English; Mathematics; Science; Australian History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship; Personal Development (PDHPE), Health and Physical Education; Visual Arts; Music; Languages (French, Japanese, Latin); Technology (mandatory).
Elective subjects (Years 9 and 10): Commerce; Design and Technology; Drama; Food Technology; Elective History, Industrial Technology (Timber); Information Software and Technology; Languages (French, Japanese, Latin); Music; Physical Activity and Sports Studies; Visual Arts.
Elective Subjects (Years 11 and 12): English (all levels), Mathematics (all levels), Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental Science, Business Studies, Economics, Legal Studies, Ancient History, Modern History, Geography, History Extension, Music 1, Music 2, Music Extension, Visual Arts, Languages (French, Japanese, Latin – Continuers and Extension), Drama, PDHPE, Information Processes and Technology, Industrial Technology (Timber), Information Technology (VET) and Hospitality (VET). In Year 11, students can also opt to study 1 unit Board Endorsed courses including Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation, and Visual Design.

Sport

Sports offered at The Hills Grammar School:
Soccer, cricket, tennis, touch football, swimming, softball, netball, basketball, volleyball, tae kwon do, circuit-training, athletics, cross-country, life-saving, rugby, bootcamp. Students also train for a broad range of interschool team competitions.
